CHAPTER 8: LOST AT BEST, ONE REQUEST
Iâve never felt more like a child in my entire life. Insisting on making me feel âbetterâ, Albert took me to a Sheetz right near the school and proceeded to purchase me an orange slushy, like I was a seven year old girl who needed to be coddled. It was awkward receiving frozen treats from an apparently supernatural stranger. However considering that I was very upset and my one weakness was indeed orange slushiness, I let him treat me. He was very persistent. We drove home from the store in Ms. Grayâs Prius as I sucked semi silently on my straw, thinking about how secretly glad I was that Albert had showed up at all.
I put my slushy into the holder the car provided.
âSomething wrong with it?â he asked me.
âNo, itâs really good,â I sighed. âSo I need to get it away from me. If I keep drinking it Iâll end up shitting an orange tree.â
Albert laughed a laugh that drew all of my attention. It was an amazing sound. Iâve never heard such a fantastic laugh. I found myself just staring at him for a second. Then I realized how stupid I was being, so when he met my gaze I quickly and stupidly stared into my lap.
âSo without you biting my head off⦠can I ask what you were doing out here, alone, at three in the morning?â Albert said as he stopped at a red light. He looked to me with those intense black eyes that seemed to meld with the darkness.
âYeah⦠if I can ask you how you found me.â
The light turned green. Albert just sat there with his hands on the steering wheel. After a considerable pause he said, âFair enough,â as he hit the gas and proceeded through the green.
I looked at him with a suspicious eye. He was wearing a red jacket and a pair of sweatpants. Even though he wasnât wearing anything under the jacket I wasnât able to see how bad his side was. I was curious about it, but more curious on how the hell he managed to get up, borrow Grayâs car and come all the way to this exact spot and find me. Especially when hours ago he was so critically injured.
âI was worried,â he started out saying. âI thought you would do something stupid and try to find Jessica. I was wrong⦠right?â
Yes, he was. âThis wasnât planned. I was sleepwalking.â
âI have a hard time seeing this as sleepwalking.â He gave me a smirk. âDo you want a second shot at a decent answer, orâ¦â
âHow did you find me? Seriously,â I asked with a mocking grin. âWhat, are you spying on me? Do you have your goonies lurking around every corner, is that it? Plant a chip in my brain?â
âIf youâre done with the cliché movie theories, no, thatâs not exactly how this works.â He came to another red light.
